Success Stories

Heartfelt Success Stories – Lifeline Heart Institute

Keyhole Bypass Surgery

Pioneers in Keyhole Bypass Surgery

Lifeline Heart Institute has made significant development in cardiac surgery by successfully performing a minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery (MIDCAB). This innovative procedure was conducted first on a 70-year-old patient with a blockage in the main artery of the heart. Dr S Rajagopal, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department, pointed out that this minimally invasive approach offers several advantages, including a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery time for patients.

Devise Closure for ‘Hole in the Heart’

Devise Closure for ‘Hole in the Heart’

Catheter based closure of congenital heart defect – ASD devise closure is being carried out successfully at the Heart Institute. Dr Cheriyan George, Senior Cardiologist, said that patients are evaluated thoroughly prior to the procedure to see if the defect can be closed without surgery.

CT Coronary Angiogram to Defeat ‘block in the heart’

CT Coronary Angiogram to Defeat ‘block in the heart’

The Cardiology and Radiology Departments of the Lifeline Hospital have established a robust system for non-invasive detection of blocks in the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart. Dr Cheriyan Koshy, Senior Cardiologist, said that the 128 Slice CT ensures high quality and accurate diagnosis. Dr Abdul Faisal, Radiologist, said that clinical correction is extremely important for precise interpretation.

Laser Angioplasty for Chest Pain

Laser Angioplasty for Chest Pain

Lifeline Heart Institute has introduced a groundbreaking new treatment - Laser Angioplasty. This innovative procedure offers significant relief to patients suffering from angina (severe chest pain) caused by severe blockages in the coronary arteries. Under the leadership of Dr Z Sajan Ahmad, Director and Head of the Cardiology Department, a team of specialists successfully performed laser angioplasty on a patient whose stent had become severely blocked. As one of only two hospitals in Kerala to offer this rare procedure at the time, and the sole provider in Pathanamthitta

Experts in Leadless Pacemaker Technology

Experts in Leadless Pacemaker Technology

Lifeline Heart Institute has a successful series of the latest leadless pacemaker micro implantations – the Worlds’ Smallest Pacemakers led by Dr Sajan Ahmad and team. These capsule sized pacemakers can be implanted in the heart without surgery through veins of the leg. This is especially beneficial for elderly patients with symptoms due to abnormally low heart rates.

Conducts Rare Heart Surgery

Conducts Rare Heart Surgery

A 58-year-old patient with a heart valve disease called bicuspid aortic valve, which causes narrowing of the valve and swelling of the aorta, the largest artery of the heart (called an aneurysm), underwent a complex surgery called the Veet procedure (a new artificial aortic valve and structural restoration with an aortic graft in the swollen area). This rare treatment was completed under the leadership of Dr. Rajagopal S, Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, and Dr. Ajit Sunny, Head of the Department of Cardiac Anesthesia. A complete heart team comprising Dr Sajan Ahmed, Head of Cardiology Department, senior cardiologists Dr Shym Sasidharan, Dr Vinod Manikandan, Dr Krishna Mohan, Dr Cherian George, Dr Cherian Koshy, and radiologists Dr Abdul Faisal, Dr Parvathy, and Dr Aji Rajan were part of the treatment.

Penumbra System Empowers Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary Angioplasty for a patient with heart attack and heavy thrombus (blood clot) was done successfully using a special Penumbra System. Cardiologist, Dr Krishna Mohan said that this is especially useful for young people with heart attack and in smokers.

Initiates Combined TAVR plus IVL Procedure

Initiates Combined TAVR plus IVL Procedure

Lifeline Heart Institute has successfully performed a rare heart valve procedure using TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) combined with IVL (Intravascular Lithotripsy) or shock wave technology. The 81-year-old patient underwent the procedure successfully. This complex procedure has been performed for the first time in southern Kerala and the second time in the entire state during mid 2024. Dr Sajan Ahmad, Head of the Cardiology Department, pointed out that this was achieved by implanting a prosthetic TAVR valve without open-heart surgery after using shock wave technology to perform angioplasty on the calcified arteries of the lower limb.

NIRS Angioplasty

Introduces NIRS Angioplasty

Lifeline Heart Institute has introduced a groundbreaking new procedure called NIRS (Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy) angioplasty. A 74-year-old patient with a coronary artery blockage was the first to undergo this successful procedure. This innovative technique provides a more accurate way to identify the composition of blockages in the coronary arteries. The NIRS technology uses colour coding, specifically yellow, to highlight areas of the blockage with higher fat content. This enhanced visualization allows cardiologists to perform more precise angioplasty and stenting procedures, tailored to the specific characteristics of the blockage. Dr Sajan Ahmad, Head of the Cardiology Department, emphasized the significance of this advancement, stating that NIRS technology enables cardiologists to perform more targeted and effective interventions.
