Types of anesthesia
There are four different type of anesthesia which are used by the Anesthetist depending on the surgery involved and the health condition of the patient. They are:
- General anesthesia : The patient is completely unconscious for the duration of the surgery. This is used for major surgeries and for children.
- Regional anesthesia : This is used for surgeries involving a part of the body, eg: caesarian section, surgery over the lower limbs, etc. The patient is not unconscious but feels no pain during the surgery.
- IV sedation : The patient is sedated and but can be easily woken up. Medicines are usually given intravenously to induce sleep.
- Local anesthesia : It involves injection local anesthetic drugs to numb a small area of the body. Patients are usually conscious for these procedures.
